The aim of this course is to present each student with the opportunity to experience and develop the methods and techniques necessary to the creation of illustrations and paintings. The students will also learn how to develop their abilities to interpret their own ideas visually.

The students will be educated in a variety of techniques, including illustration, figure drawing, and painting

This course will span two higher education levels:

In Level 1 you will develop an understanding of the basic visual language of illustration, exploring drawing, composition, framing, and colour theory. You will learn the basic principles of human figure drawing while working from a live model. You'll be introduced to watercolour paint and ink. Sketchbooks are an important tool here for developing your creative thinking, visual research and ideas development.
For this level no prior knowledge is needed.

In Level 2 you will further develop your practical skills, extending your understanding of illustration and begin to define your own style. You’ll get a deeper insight into human anatomy, will learn how work with light and shadows, recognise different levels of tone, and replicate them in both monotone and colour. You'll learn colour techniques used by professional illustrators to create elaborate images with watercolour and ink.

This level requires a prior knowledge in drawing and painting!

Watercolor for illustration
We will work with pen and watercolors. The course will be divided into separate subjects, where we will learn different watercolor techniques applied to concrete tasks.

› Introduction to materials in the market. Inks and Watercolors, working from objects
› Architecture: Background, mood and focus (flat washes, glazing)
› People: Figure and portrait (mixing colours, color bridges)
› People in an environment (focus through color and line)

Basic Perspective
Introduction to one and two point perspective. Explanation of the principles of perspective drawing. Simple exercises, which can be repeated at home, using a still life to begin developing your own perspective skills.

Figure drawing
The figure drawing module of the course will aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of how to draw the human body, and provide a platform for further self-driven improvement. Combining both theory classes and working from a live model, we will cover the principles of human figure drawing, including:

› Construction
The students will learn how to take the first step in figure drawing, and learn some fool-proof techniques for beginning to construct the human figure.
› Proportion
One of the most important aspects behind drawing the figure, we will learn how to construct perfectly (and imperfectly) proportionate human beings.

› Introduction to Anatomy
Anatomy is a massive subject, even in drawing, but is essential in creating realistic figure drawings - in this class, we will learn about the shape and function of the superficial layer of muscles.

› Hands and Feet (in detail)
A class focusing on the construction and movement of hands and feet. Exercises to understand the structure of the hand and visual aids to make drawing hands easier.

Shading theory and technique
During this module of the course, students will be introduced to the fundamentals behind working with light and shadow, working from still life objects.

Watercolor for illustration
We will work with more complex exercises to understand the balance between line and watercolor. We will look for different ways to abstract our images in order to find a personal style.

› Architecture: the minimalistic line, exercises for abstracting your images
› Architecture: shapes in watercolor to abstract your image
› People: Shapes and shadows to create exprection
› People: fashion portrait illustration (Mix media approach, watercolor and ink)

Advanced Perspective
Study of two and three point perspective, with the uses of three point perspective for special effects and storytelling. Discussion of use of perspective in composition and to meet client requirements.

Portrait Drawing (in detail)
Students will learn how to draw the portrait from scratch, covering propotions, construction, facial features and technique.

Advanced Figure Drawing
For the advanced figure drawing module of the course, it will be assumed that the students already have a good knowledge of the basics; proportions, basic muscle structure, etc. We will aim to further your understanding of how to draw the human body, and provide a platform for further self-driven improvement.

› Foreshortening
Learning how to draw more complicated poses, especially those that employ strong perspective.
›Shading the figure
We will learn how to shade the figure in both black and white and colour, especially looking at how to replicate skin tones.

Gesture drawing/Action Line
> A class that explores six different methods for drawing the figure fluidly and powerfully. We will draw from a live model with short poses and in this intensive session you will find a technique for figure drawing that works best for you.

Shading Theory and Technique
We will delve deeper into working with light and shadows, how to recognise different levels of tone, and replicate those tones through the application of different materials, including pencil, charcoal and conté crayon. We will also introduce working with colour, and how to imitate tone in coloured scenes and objects, working with pastels.

Students will work from both still life scenes and a live figure model in this module of the course.
